One of my ATLA colleagues just pointed out this practical guide to RDA: RDA Training Booklet by Marielle Veve. It can be used as a quick reference for cataloging changes needed for the switch from AACR2 to RDA.

RDA: to teach, or not to teach

When students are just getting into the basics of cataloging--Do you introduce them to AACR2 and RDA, or just AACR2?

I'm sure every teacher of cataloging is asking themselves that question. It's the topic of this post, Teaching cataloguing again, written by Louise Spiteri, director of the School of Information Management, Dalhousie University.

Cataloging rule changes of the past

Cataloging hall of famers: Michael Gorman, Janet Swan Hill, and Arlene Taylor discuss what it was like to live through cataloging rule changes in the past in this ALISE 2010 program: Technical Services: Past, Present, Future. Don't let this boring title fool you. This audio discussion of how libraries transitioned from the ALA-LC cataloging rules to AACR1 and AACR1 to AACR2 is fascinating and well-worth listening to. The panel also shares their thoughts (and strong opinions) on RDA and its possible future as a new cataloging code.

However, the format is beginning to fail libraries as many of our partners and potential partners in a greatly enriched information ecosystem do not "speak" MARC but handle their data in very different ways. RDA elements and vocabularies represent the distillation of library descriptive knowledge, optimized for use within an environment that speaks XML, RDF, and linked data, and which seek to express that knowledge in an FRBR-aware manner. This webinar will provide a brief overview of RDA elements and vocabularies.

This presentation will discuss results from an IMLS-sponsored research project that examined 56 million WorldCat bibliographic records and analyzed patterns of use by catalogers of available fields/subfields. The data provide evidence that can inform specifications for core records based on catalogers' practices.
