Would it not be awesome to work on that metadata? I seriously would LOVE to get my hands on it and play, er, work on it to make it useful.

Awesome, definitely awesome. It would be the mother of all metadata projects! I think that Google will find some interesting programmatic ways to solve their "metadata mess."
